Pelagic SAMPLING

The pelagic system (water column) contains phytoplankton that can also be influenced by warming temperatures and chemical pollution. Water samples of the pelagic system can be analysed the same way as benthic algae samples and provide a picture of how the community in the water column is responding to different treatments.

Materials

1L plastic bottle
Vacuum filter pump
Whatman filter papers
Centrifuge
Spectrophotometer
Ethanol

Procedures

Sample Collection

Fill the entire 1L bottle with water from the mesocosm.

Sample analysis

Use the same procedure outlined in the Algae sampling protocol to analyse the collected samples.
